Agriculture and Rural Development

The Higher Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development sets to guide each student to attain intellectual and professional competence, personal growth and development, and cultivate a sense of social and civic responsibility. In addition the Higher Institute shall guide the students to develop and acquire technologies to ensure local, national and international food security and sovereignty as well as rational management of natural resources.

Program Description and Objective: 

Provide local and national leadership in agriculture with emphasis on food security and sovereignty

  1. Structure the Institute for maximum effectiveness and continuous improvement in contributing to the University’s complex mission of education, research and technology transfer,
  2.  Maintain an institutional environment that is intellectually challenging for Lecturers, staff, students, farmers and, the community and,
  3. Develop a climate that is supportive of women and men and one that reflects Cameroon’s rich cultural and ethnic diversity. 
  4. Build capacities to enhance the achievement of national goals and policies (e.g. Vision 2035, Second Generation Agriculture) and International ones (e.g. The Sustainable Development Goals-SDGs and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - UNFCCC)

Graduates from the Higher Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development can serve as  primary comprehensive resource staff in education, research and various services to the public, eg. Teachers or Trainers in Agricultural Schools and Training Institutions; Research Staff in Agricultural Research Institutes; Agric or Development Officers in various Private and Public offices; Staff in International and National Development NGOs. Graduates can open and run their own personal enterprises in the agricultural and development sectors. Above all, graduates are prepared for Post Graduate studies in all the areas of specialization

 The Higher Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (HIARD) offers the following programs at the Masters Degree Level.

General Course structureEach masters degree program runs for 4 semesters (2 academic years), with an internship at the end of the first year, and research project in the last semester. Each course has lecture, tutorial and practical sessions. The courses for each semester sum up to 30 credits, that is, 120 credits for the entire program.Admission Requirements:

  1. Bachelor Degree in any related field of study with at least the grade of second class Honours (2.5/4 and above) from any institution recognized by the Cameroon Ministry of Higher Education.
  2. Certified Copies of Academic Qualifications (GCE AL or its Equivalents)
  3. Four Passports Size Photos
  4. Medical Certificate
  5. Application form of 10.000Frs payable to the Bursar BUST
  6. Certified copy of birth certificate 

  

Entry Requirements: 

SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR HND AND B.Sc. Degree

  1. Five “O” Level passes including English Language, Mathematics and Biology.
  2. Two  “A” Level passes including Biology’
  3. Bacc C and an English Proficiency Certificate.

Students from the National Cooperative Colleges, Regional Schools of Agriculture, Wild life, Forestry, Zoo -Technical Veterinary Medicine, Higher Teacher Training College (HTTCs) and Higher Technical Teacher Training Colleges (HTTTCs) are admitted into the Faculty on a case by case basis. Emphasis is placed on the “O” and “A” level requirements as described above as well as on performance records from precedent schools. A qualifying common entrance examination is also required of candidates for the Professional Bachelor of Science degree.Foreign students must present a certificate of equivalence from the Cameroon Ministry of Higher Education with their foreign diplomas. 

Graduation Requirements: 

Students must validate all University General and Institute Requirements (Tables I & II) as well as a minimum of 90 credits in the discipline of interest. All transfer students must fulfill at least one year residency, a minimum of 60 credits as well as the necessary University, Institute and Departmental requirements.
